Working For The City

To make a city run smoothly there are hundreds of people with thousands of different skills that need to all come together. You need people with big picture ideas who can work in city hall and people who know how to fix a wall mounted boiler to keep all of the city buildings running smoothly. All of these different positions can be very rewarding and are usually some of the most stable careers within a city. Here are some of the benefits to working for your local government.

Everyone, from teacher to those who operate an industrial mixer, wants some of the same things out of a job and positions where you work for the city include a lot of these perks. The majority of government positions come with health care packages, and some vacation time. You will also be able to work towards a pension for when you retire. In a country where the safety blanket of social security is waning, this is a huge plus. If you're working with pipeline strainers at a factory you may not have this level of benefits.

Government run organizations also usually promote professional growth for their employees. This means that you could start right out of school working in the office that manages the city's used septic tank trucks and be eligible to receive training to work in a higher office. This could mean taking part in management training courses or doing an apprenticeship with another department where you have more interest.

Because there are so many people working within government offices, there is also usually a lot of flexibility in terms of everyone's hours and what they are focusing on with their work. If you're working in the subsurface utility engineering office, for example, you may be able to job share with another employee when you need a lighter work schedule or you could swap some hours between several weeks to make room for a much-needed day off. With the advances in Internet technology, there are even more people who are able to do part of their job from the comfort of their own home. If you're a single parent, for example, this could make a huge difference to your life.

If you're looking for a new career than you should definitely consider working for the City of Vancouver. This is a diverse environment in terms of the people you will be working with and the things that you can accomplish.
